Chapter Sixteen

ALISSA STOOD SILENTLY by Leon’s side, looking down at the two men entwined on the floor, unconscious. “Oh, God, Leon, what have we done?”

“Sometimes, Miss Satterfield, it turns out there is no winning move. Take them back to their room.” Leon knelt to feel the pulse in both men’s necks.

“How are they?” Alissa crouched at their sides, the tracks of tears still bright on her cheeks.

“They seem…fine.” Leon laid the back of his palm on his brother’s sweaty forehead. “They’re both breathing easy. Although God knows how that should be the case, given what Casey’s been through.”

Alissa glanced up. Leon rarely referred to Casey as anything other than Agent Wicker, and the gentleness with which it was uttered now surprised her. At her look, the openness on his face disappeared, and he made haste to explain himself.

“Is it such a surprise, Alissa, that I can be grateful to the man who was willing to sacrifice himself for my younger brother? I may be cold, but I’m not heartless.”

She blushed and looked away, gesturing for someone to help carry the unconscious men back to their room. She stood silently in the corner as both were stripped to their underwear and settled into the bed. Leon entered without a sound to check them one last time and rolled his sleeping brother so that the two of them were nestled together. He suspected that when they awoke, the immediate presence of the other would be more cathartic than all the medication in the entire house.
